World leaders have welcomed a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, hailing it as a crucial step toward de-escalation while widely praising Pakistan for its decisive mediation role in averting a broader regional conflict.

The agreement follows days of heightened tensions, during which Pakistan emerged as a key diplomatic player by maintaining neutrality and engaging all sides. Islamabad hosted critical talks and proposed a structured peace plan, positioning itself as a bridge between the conflicting parties.

At a pivotal moment, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged Washington to delay planned strikes on Iran and called on Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz temporarily as a goodwill gesture. His appeal gained international focus just before the deadline set by US President Donald Trump.

Soon after, President Trump declared a temporary suspension of military operations, stating that the decision followed discussions with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan’s military leadership, including Field Marshal Asim Munir.

Iran responded positively, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressing appreciation for Pakistan’s efforts and confirming that Tehran would halt its “defensive operations” if attacks ceased. He also indicated that controlled maritime access through the Strait of Hormuz would be permitted during the ceasefire.

The ceasefire drew swift international support. Antonio Guterres described it as a meaningful step toward reducing tensions and acknowledged Pakistan’s diplomatic contribution.

European leaders echoed similar sentiments. Kaja Kallas called the agreement a “step back from the brink,” stressing the importance of restoring shipping routes and continuing diplomacy. Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz also thanked Pakistan for its mediation efforts.

Leaders from across the globe, including Malaysia’s Anwar Ibrahim and Australia’s Anthony Albanese, commended Pakistan’s balanced approach. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer termed the ceasefire a moment of relief and called for sustained efforts toward a lasting agreement.

Countries across the Middle East and beyond including Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Oman also welcomed the development, while New Zealand and Indonesia emphasized the need for continued dialogue to secure long-term peace.

While the truce offers temporary relief, global leaders stressed that ongoing diplomatic engagement will be essential to transform this pause into a durable resolution.
