Pakistan’s stance on the Palestine issue has, since its inception
Pakistan’s stance on the #Palestine issue has, since its inception, been in line with Quaid’s views on the matter. Pakistan hasn’t accepted the state of #Israel and, given the historical precedent, never will. Reps from Pakistan have consistently advocated for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the pre-1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as the Palestinians’ capital city at all the international forums from the #UN to the OIC.- The Pakistan Air-Force participated in the 1967 and 1973 Arab–Israeli wars, Pakistani pilots downed several Israeli planes. In the 1982 battle for Beirut between Israel and the PLO, fifty Pakistani volunteers serving in the PLO were taken prisoner by Israel. After the 1973 war, Pakistan and the PLO signed an agreement for training PLO officers in Pakistani military institutions.- The PLO was first recognized as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinians at an Islamic summit in Lahore in February 1974. In 1975, Pakistan had supported and voted in favor of UN General Assembly Resolution 3379 which had equated Zionism with racism (the resolution was later revoked with Resolution 4686 but Pakistan voted against revoking it).- After the Palestinian Declaration of Independence on November 15, 1988, Pakistan recognized the Palestinian Authority on 16 November 1988 and had established full diplomatic relations with it by the end of 1989.- Caretaker PM Anwar ul Haq Kakar recently reiterated Pakistan’s position on the issue in an interview: “We have a stance: Israel is known and understood to be an occupying state which is what we also believe,”. – He said “This is the war between the oppressor and the oppressed.” He categorically denied that Pakistan was trying to shift its Palestine policy, saying that nothing had changed over the years to warrant such a change. – In the wake of the ongoing conflict, Pakistan has sent substantial humanitarian assistance to Gaza. People who use rhetorical arguments for their political gains often fail to take into consideration the nuanced character of global politics. – Pakistan adopts measures that are in accordance with the international norms of justice, human rights and peace to support the Palestinian people’s right to freedom and self-determination. Diplomatic means and a principled stance are the most effective tools in today’s world.
