Rising suicide rates and mental health issues in Indian armed forces
Indian armed forces are facing increasing rates of suicide and mental health issues, according to various media reports. Since 2007, over 586 Indian soldiers have reportedly committed suicide in Kashmir.
International media sources attribute these issues to policy challenges and difficult working conditions. Factors cited include mental stress, harsh weather conditions, lack of leave, and prolonged deployments.
According to Indian media reports:
– Approximately 40% of military personnel may be suffering from mental health issues
– Around 15% of soldiers allegedly use alcohol to cope with stress.
