Azerbaijan Appoints Irfan Davudov As New Ambassador to Pakistan

Irfan Davudov has been appointed Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Pakistan, marking a new diplomatic assignment in Islamabad for the senior Azerbaijani diplomat.
A decree approving the appointment was signed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, with the document published on the official website of the President of Azerbaijan.
Davudov brings previous diplomatic experience in Southeast Asia to his new position. Before being appointed to Pakistan, he served as Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Malaysia, while also being accredited to Brunei Darussalam. His appointment comes as Pakistan and Azerbaijan continue to strengthen their political, economic and strategic relationship, with the two countries maintaining close cooperation on regional and international issues.
Pakistan and Azerbaijan have traditionally enjoyed cordial bilateral relations, supported by high-level political contacts and mutual diplomatic backing on issues of importance to both countries. The two sides have also sought to expand economic and commercial ties, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, energy, tourism and connectivity.
Azerbaijan has emerged as an increasingly important partner for Pakistan in the South Caucasus, while Islamabad has consistently supported Azerbaijan’s position on issues concerning its territorial integrity and sovereignty. In recent years, bilateral engagement has also gained momentum through high-level visits and institutional mechanisms aimed at expanding cooperation.
The appointment of Davudov is therefore expected to provide fresh impetus to efforts to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen coordination between Islamabad and Baku. As ambassador, Davudov will be responsible for representing Azerbaijan in Pakistan and advancing his country’s diplomatic, political and economic interests. His responsibilities will also include promoting greater people-to-people contacts and facilitating cooperation between the two countries across various sectors.
His previous posting in Malaysia and concurrent accreditation to Brunei Darussalam has given him experience in managing Azerbaijan’s diplomatic relations across the wider Asian region. The new ambassador is expected to assume his responsibilities in Islamabad at a time when Pakistan is seeking to broaden partnerships with countries beyond its traditional economic and diplomatic partners.
For Azerbaijan, Pakistan remains an important partner in South Asia, while Islamabad views Baku as a significant partner in the South Caucasus and a potential gateway for stronger economic and regional connectivity. Davudov’s appointment is expected to further institutionalize these ties and contribute to the expansion of bilateral cooperation in the years ahead.
