India’s ruling Hindu nationalist party accused of weaponising Israel-Hamas war

Since the October 7 Hamas attacks, India has become a hub of fake news and Islamophobic content. On social media, as well as on 24-hour news channels, the conflict between Israel and Hamas has inflamed Hindu extremists, venting their hatred of Muslims under the guise of support for Israel. For the ruling Hindu nationalist BJP party and its supporters, backing the Netanyahu government has become a way to promote their own Islamophobic agenda. Ahead of legislative elections scheduled for spring 2024, many are denouncing the weaponizing of the Middle East conflict for electoral purposes. Our correspondents report.
