Pakistan, Oman boost energy ties with fuel imports

Pakistan and Oman strengthened energy cooperation as Islamabad imported three petrol cargoes and one diesel shipment from Omani ports in March, with two additional petrol cargoes scheduled later this month.

The move comes as Pakistan pursues diversification of its energy imports and aims to ensure supply resilience amid evolving regional dynamics, particularly concerns over reliance on the Strait of Hormuz, according to the press release.

Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik held a meeting with Fahad Bin Sulaiman Bin Khalaf Alkharusi, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to Pakistan, to discuss bilateral collaboration in the energy sector.

During the meeting, the Federal Minister highlighted Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to explore alternative routes and sources for energy imports.

The Ambassador welcomed these efforts and assured Pakistan that requests for preferential energy cargoes would be considered favorably to meet the country’s growing demand.

The talks also focused on opportunities in the upstream oil and gas sector, including exploration, production, and development projects.

Pakistan State Oil (PSO) and Oman Trading International (OQT) are engaged in constructive discussions to explore additional oil cargoes to help meet Pakistan’s energy needs.

The meeting reaffirmed the long-standing, cordial relations between Pakistan and Oman, rooted in shared history, mutual respect, and strong people-to-people ties, while emphasizing the shared commitment to further deepen cooperation in the energy sector.

These developments come at a time when global oil supply volatility and regional security concerns are prompting Pakistan to diversify its energy sources.

The March shipments from Oman have contributed to stabilizing domestic fuel availability, and ongoing negotiations aim to secure further cargoes and strategic partnerships in oil and gas development.
