PAKISTAN’S growing diplomatic engagement in conflict resolution is transforming its image into that of a credible international peacemaker. Recent reports suggest Islamabad has quietly undertaken mediation between Libya’s rival eastern and western administrations. Pakistan’s mediation initiative demonstrates that its commitment to peace extends beyond diplomatic rhetoric and is reflected in practical efforts to bridge differences and foster dialogue.

Libya has remained trapped in political turmoil since the 2011. The country continues to be divided between rival governments in the east and west, each backed by different political and military forces. Despite repeated international efforts, disputes over governance, control of institutions and the management of Libya’s vast oil wealth have prevented the holding of long-awaited national elections. The prolonged instability has weakened state institutions, hindered economic recovery and prolonged the suffering of ordinary Libyans, making a negotiated political settlement more urgent than ever. Against this backdrop, Pakistan’s reported mediation effort is both timely and significant. According to informed sources, the initiative began late last year after both Libyan sides sought Islamabad’s involvement. The process is reportedly being undertaken with the knowledge and support of the United States and Saudi Arabia, while Qatar and Türkiye have also encouraged Pakistan to facilitate dialogue. Such confidence from key regional and international players reflects growing recognition of Pakistan as a dependable diplomatic partner capable of engaging with all sides. Pakistan’s role is strengthened by its longstanding cordial relations with Libya. The two countries have traditionally enjoyed friendly ties based on mutual respect and cooperation. In recent times, their relationship has expanded further through growing defence cooperation, while Pakistan has maintained contacts with different Libyan stakeholders. This balanced engagement places Islamabad in a unique position to encourage trust between rival factions without appearing partisan. The initiative also follows Pakistan’s constructive role in facilitating communication between the United States and Iran, an effort that received appreciation from around the world. Taken together, these developments signal a foreign policy that increasingly values diplomacy over confrontation and dialogue over discord. Rather than seeking influence through power politics, Pakistan is demonstrating that patient engagement and quiet diplomacy can make meaningful contributions to international peace. If its diplomacy helps advance a peaceful political settlement, it will not only offer renewed hope to the Libyan people but also further enhance Pakistan’s international standing.
